At the Green Vanity, we care about what you put on and in your body. We wanted to share with you a drink that we love to make because it helps to keep skin glowing as it aids in digestion and is packed with vitamin C. This is not a pill, supplement or protein shake. It’s very simple: lemon water.

Healthy folks have been drinking this simple mix for a long time, and I don’t just mean back a few decades, it’s been known to go all the way back to ancient Rome.

There are crazy claims that have been made for lemon water lately as it gets more attention, so let’s set a few things straight: it’s not a cure-all or a band-aid. But it’s easy, it’s good for your skin and helpful for your digestion. Pair it with a healthy diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and fruit and you’re setting yourself up for beautiful skin!

Why lemons?

-Being a powerful antioxidant, lemon can protect your body from various free radicals and strengthen your immune system.

-The acidic juice has the opposite effect in our body: providing alkalizing benefits within our system

-Lemons are a great vitamin C food source, as an antioxidant vitamin C also protects cells from oxidative stress.  It also helps the body continue producing collagen, essential in smoothing out lines in the face. Antioxidants fight damage caused by free radicals, keeping our skin looking fresh.

-They stimulate our digestive system, improving its efficiency

-According to Dr. Axe, lemon juice also offers up a healthy serving of potassium, magnesium and copper

-Aiding our digestion means healthier skin and less bloating. Lemon water stimulates the liver and helps to flush out toxins.

How often?

Daily is best! When we start getting into practices to benefit our body, it is best to try the new habit daily for a few weeks until we get into it. We have to trust that even if we forget for a few days, that we can always hop back on to the wagon. Life happens – don’t beat yourself up for working hard at new habits. It takes time. Eventually it will be second nature to make your daily drink. Start with the juice of a quarter of a lemon and work your way up to half a lemon. By the way, this has to be a real lemon. The plastic container of “Realemon” is not only NOT real lemon, but it will not give us the benefits that we want.


I love the benefits of lemon water myself but there are many other ways you can use lemons.

Here are some of my favorites:

-Deodorize your kitchen naturally. Need to clear up a bad kitchen smell? Add fresh lemon peels, cinnamon sticks or cloves to a pot of water and simmer on the stove.

-Use lemon essential oil in your diffuser for a clean smell and natural mood-booster.

-Use lemon juice and skin in baking or cooking for extra zest in meals

-Respiratory problems: I had a helpful Facebook post when we had fires blaze our Okanagan summer. Smokey Tip: have a big pot of water simmering in your kitchen with bits of fresh lemon, sage or basil to help cleanse the air in your home

-Squeeze it on your veggies (especially avocado/guacamole) before refrigeration to prevent your leftovers from going brown


In addition to the health benefits of our lemon water, the great part about it is that many clients find they start drinking MORE water once they find this way to spice it up! More water during our days is so important for proper hydration – skin health – and digestion.

So squeeze those lemons and embrace a small change that has so many benefits.
